USB 3.0: LCP plastic & halogen free
The USB organization decided to promote halogen free plastic and it’s a great step towards a better environment protection. Nevertheless, it’s an additional challenge for connector manufacturers.
Halogen being the most efficient plastic flame retardant, it is hard to replace. Therefore, the USB organization downgraded its expectation to UL 94 HB rating which is a much lower/worse flammability rating compared to UL94-V0 used in 99% of today existing connectors. Many connector manufacturers decided to fit with this minimal requirement while Wurth Elektronik decided to maintain a UL94-V0 plastic even in halogen free conditions
LCP is today the only plastic capable to combine the following properties together:
- Halogen free
- UL 94-V0
- Reflow capabilities
- Maintain the same blue color even after reflow process
USB 3.0 Applications:
- Computers
- External hard drives
- Digital cameras, MC3 players, etc.
- GPS devices
- Industrial application

USB 3.0: Why Super High Speed?
The USB 3.0 specification was released on November 12, 2008 by the promoter group made of the following 6 companies: Intel, HP, Microsoft, NEC, Texas Instrument & NXP. It brings the following improvements vs. USB 2.0
- Up to 10x higher data rate than USB 2.0 (4.8Gbps vs. 480Mbps)
- Separate data lanes for up & download which allows to read and store files at the same time
- Due to higher current capacities, quicker charge of mobile devices through USB
- Better power efficiency due to the interrupt-driven protocol
- Backwards-compatible to USB 2.0 standard
The new USB 3.0 standard, also known as USB Super High Speed, brings about an impressive 10x increase in bandwidth, compared to the old USB 2.0 standard which topped out at 480 Mbps. This makes it theoretically possible to transfer a 25GB HD movie in just 1 minute and 10 seconds (compared to USB 2.0 which needs 15 min). Of course, speeds will be limited by other devices such as your hard drive and portable device.
The USB 3.0 connectors have up to 80% more power capacity compared to USB 2.0. The USB 3.0 connectors are backwards compatible with theolder USB connectors (2.0 & 1.1)
| USB version | Date rate |
|---|---|
| USB 1.0 | 1,5 Mbps |
| USB 1.1 | 12 Mbps |
| USB 2.0 | 480 Mbps |
| USB 3.0 | 4,8 Gbps |
